Teacher for the Visually Impaired and Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist; Education Coordinator, Virginia Department for the Blind and Vision Impaired
Valery Kircher is a Teacher for the Visually Impaired (TVI) as well as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS). She graduated from Kutztown University with a BS in Elementary Education and Special Education in Visual Impairment, and later attended Western Michigan University for her MA in Orientation and Mobility for Children. Valery continued her education, and received her Juris Doctorate. Valery recently completed coursework for her Certification in CVI from UMass, Boston.
Valery has worked extensively in the field of blindness and low vision as a TVI and COMS in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, the United Kingdom and Virginia. Currently, Valery works at the Department for the Blind and Vision Impaired in Virginia as an Education Coordinator. Valery works extensively with families of children from birth to 21 years of age in public, private and home school settings where she assess children in early intervention, home school and private school settings in FVA/LMA, CVI and O&M assessments. Valery mentors TVI’s and O&M Specialists covering twenty school districts in both rural and urban settings. Valery frequently collaborates with families, schools and early interventions specialists to problem solve solutions at meetings such as a student’s IEP. Valery facilitates and attends low vision exams, and instructs students on the use of prescribed low vision aids. Valery presents at teacher state meetings, and conferences on topics related to vision loss including O&M, CVI and the Expanded Core Curriculum. Valery has created a screening tool to assist COMS in determining O&M areas of instruction for school-aged students with CVI. Valery has presented on the CVI and O&M Screening Tool at conferences, schools for the blind, state meetings, and hopes to continue to share this valuable tool with O&M Specialists.
