Shefa Gordon, PhD

About

Dr. Gordon is associate director for science policy and legislation at the National Eye Institute (NEI), where he directs the Office of Program Planning and Analysis. He coordinates NEI reporting, planning, and portfolio analysis activities, and serves as the legislative liaison. He led the development of the NEI Strategic Plan: Vision for the Future 2021-2025 and is currently leading implementation efforts across the seven Areas of Emphasis defined by the plan. He earned a BA in biochemistry at Rice University followed by a PhD in neuroscience at UC Berkeley. As a Presidential Management Fellow, he spent two years at the National Institutes of Health evaluating a collaborative research program on type 1 diabetes. He was also a fellow on the House Ways and Means Health Subcommittee, working on mental health and end-stage renal disease.
