Creating a world in which people who are blind have the same career opportunities as their sighted peers won’t happen overnight. Reversing a 75 percent unemployment rate requires bold thinking, innovative technology and a commitment to social change.
Leading the way is Perkins President and CEO Dave Power, who spoke on the issue at TEDxBeaconStreet in November. A video of his talk, “Making the World Accessible,” is now available on the TEDx Talks YouTube Page and can be seen below:
In his talk, Power described new innovations in braille technology, facial recognition software and transportation that will increase opportunities for people who are blind to live and work independently.
“The technology is pretty exciting, but technology isn’t the biggest barrier,” he said. “We, sighted people, are much more of an obstacle. Sometimes we’re not comfortable with people who are blind. We don’t know what to do or say.”
Making sure that people who are blind have an equal opportunity to succeed – in school, on the job and in everyday life – starts with each of us, Power said.
“We need to make the world more accessible for them,” he said. “We need to help them access information, navigate from place to place and find their way into our workforce and into our communities.”
