Using “Share My Location” as a Visually Impaired Traveler

How and why travelers with visual impairments should know about the Share My Location feature.

“The vast majority of Americans – 95% – now own a cellphone of some kind. The share of Americans that own smartphones is now 77%, up from just 35% in Pew Research Center’s first survey of smartphone ownership conducted in 2011.”

With the aforementioned in mind, there are tools and resources within our grasp to help become more proactive as travelers. It is important to consider ways to stay safe and/or let others know where you are while navigating as a visually impaired traveler.

As a student or client’s travel skills improve and they start to venture out more, using location sharing is a good option for knowing where travelers are in real time. The Share My Location feature is good for the following:

  1. Students that have Smartphones and travel out of their homes to go to school, work, or to hang out or play with their friends.
  2. Students and clients that are beginner travelers and would need a ‘virtual eye’ of sorts, on them as they start to travel independently.
  3. Travelers that use ride sharing services like Uber and Lyft.

    • Both Uber and Lyft have Share Status Features built into their apps.
  4. Travelers that have unique needs and might require additional monitoring on simple routes.
