Vegetables, annual flowers, trees, and shrubs all do best with 1 inch of water each week. A rain gauge will tell you how much irrigation or rain water has been added to your garden.

You can make an inexpensive but functional rain gauge out of a coffee can, a pickle jar, or anything with straight sides.
