Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and Cortical/Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI)
Description
This micro-credential is awarded to individuals who have successfully completed the AAC & CVI online class.
This seven week online, asynchronous course presents information on how to design and implement an augmentative and alternative communication system (AAC) for individuals with Cortical/Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI). It reviews the purpose of AAC, the visual behaviors of CVI, and considerations around assessment, design, implementation, data collection, and collaboration.
Competency
In order to earn this micro-credential, participants will demonstrate achievement of the learning outcomes outline below.
● Identify different types of AAC and the kinds of people they are appropriate for, as well as the different functions of various AAC devices
● Identify the reasons behind using AAC
● Describe an inclusive model of the visual behaviors of CVI
● Describe how considerations for CVI need to be taken into account when implementing an AAC system
● Determine what goes into an AAC and CVI assessment and how that information supports decisions around implementation of an AAC system
● Describe how specific CVI accommodations that inform decisions related to AAC
● Identify best practices for designing and implementing an AAC system for students with CVI.
● Describe access methods for students with CVI when using an AAC system
● Identify how to set up an AAC device to ensure student success
● Describe how to expand the use of AAC as the students develop skills
● Identify how to mix and match AAC systems to meet student needs
● Describe best practices for inter-professional collaboration to support AAC design and implementation for students with CVI
● Describe obstacles and unique circumstances individuals with CVI that should be considered when developing AAC systems
