STEMIE: Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons

STEM books and activities for birth to 5 year olds!

The STEM Innovation for Inclusion in Early Education Center (STEMIE) is focused on bringing accessible STEM content to children ages 0-5 with disabilities. They have created a Storybook Conversation curriculum guides to help teachers and parents bring STEM content to these young emerging readers in a meaningful way. STEMIE Center is part of the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute at the University of North Carolina.

Storybook Conversations

Storybooks Conversations are centered around a book that embraces STEM concepts. Each book has an associated document with resources, questions about the book to ask the student, and related STEM building activities. The resources often include specific activities to support children with visual impairments or deaf-blindness, communication symbols, and visual cues.

A popular book, Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons, is one book in the Storybook Conversations. Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons is a book written by Eric Litwin and illustrated by James Dean. In this book, Pete the Cat sings about his shirt and counts his four groovy buttons. When some fall off, Pete has to subtract and count again. Can you help Pete count his changing number of buttons?
