How to Slow Down the Double Tap Speed on iOS 9.1 Devices

Have a slow double tap? Here is information about how you can change the speed setting!

Many students and adults struggle with the speed of the double tap gesture when using VoiceOver on an iPad, iPhone or iPod. Beginning with  iOS 9.1, a new feature has been added to allow users with dexterity issues or who struggle with the fast double tap motion.

Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver (scroll down) > Double tap time out

The default is .25 seconds, meaning that taps that occur within the .25 seconds will perform the double tap VoiceOver gesture. You can increase the time to .50 seconds for students who require extra time. Note: You can also decrease to .20 seconds.

Teacher Hint: While some students definitely need the longer time frame to physically make a double tap, it is recommended to first try teaching students to perform the double tap in the .25 time frame. Preschoolers and other young students may initially have trouble with the double tap gesture, with practice, most students will be successful. It is beneficial to learn to produce the double tap in the default time, as it encourages students to process and react with technology at a pace that is equivalent to their peers. Just like students should be encouraged (and specifically taught) to increase VoiceOver speech rate, students should be taught to create gestures quickly!
