CVI: Know the facts

  • Cerebral/Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI) is the leading cause of childhood blindness and low vision, yet it’s alarming underdiagnosed. Less than 20% of kids and young adults in the U.S. with CVI have a diagnosis.
  • CVI commonly occurs with cerebral palsy, epilepsy, autism, developmental delay, rare diseases, and other conditions that affect the brain.
  • CVI also occurs alongside ocular visual impairments. Because it is a brain-based visual impairment, individuals with 20/20 vision can still be blind or have low vision due to CVI.
  • CVI impacts all aspects of life: development, learning, socialization, navigation, access to the environment, and more.
