Changing the way we see: A vision for children with CVI

A CVI webinar that focuses on the emerging movement across education, medicine, neuroscience and parent advocacy—to reach more children with CVI.

CVI is the leading cause of pediatric visual impairment. The incredible thing about CVI is that with an accurate early diagnosis, and access to trained teachers who can provide the individualized, research-based educational interventions based on comprehensive assessment, there is the expectation that vision can improve for children with CVI. Their brains can build connections enabling increased use of functional vision.

We need to find ways to ensure that every child with CVI across the U.S. is accurately diagnosed and has access to the educational interventions that will change their lives. There are thousands of children with CVI who are not getting what they need to make this kind of progress. Perkins School for the Blind and Hunter College are collaborating with each other and with other organizations across the medical and research community, in blindness education, and in higher education teacher training programs—to address this challenge and improve outcomes for children with CVI.

We’re making progress in a number of different areas, but there’s so much more work to be done. Our hope is that you can find a way to plug into what is a growing movement to ensure that children with CVI have access to the services they need to thrive. We invite you to learn more about the emerging movement across education, medicine, neuroscience and parent advocacy, to reach more children with CVI.

Watch this video to hear first-hand from leaders in the field about the important work being done, the progress we’re making together, and how you can be a part of this critical work.

Presenters include:

The question before each of our expert panelists: What will it take to reach every child with CVI? What will it take for children to get what they need—so that they have all of the opportunities available to them that come with learning how to see. Each panelist presented their perspective then engaged in a dynamic discussion to answer questions from participants.
