This badge is awarded to individuals who have completed the Applying the Expanded Core Self-Paced Tutorial. This tutorial educates participants on the nine areas of the Expanded Core and its significance in the education of students with visual impairments.


In order to earn this micro-credential, participants will need to demonstrate the ability to demonstrate achievement of the following learning objectives:

  1. Describe the history and development of the Expanded Core Curriculum
  2. Describe a method for incorporating the ECC into a student program
  3. Identify a student’s areas of strength and opportunities for development in each of the Expanded Core areas.
  4. Explain the benefits of using symbol systems in the education of students with multiple disabilities, including deafblindness
  5. Identify a teaching strategy that addresses Compensatory Skills or Sensory Efficiency
  6. Recognize strategies for parents and families to reinforce ECC skills at home
  7. Incorporate social skills development into the educational environment
  8. Relate childhood social activities to necessary development skills
  9. Discuss the importance of transition planning beyond job training
  10. Identify the differences between services provided for children and adults with disabilities
  11. Explain how early social intervention prepares a child for adulthood
  12. Compare and contrast philosophies about mobility cane training for young children
  13. Describe mobility aids and assistive devices and analyze the skills required for proficiency
  14. Relate AT proficiency to other areas of the ECC
  15. Identify opportunities for ECC skill development for a child with multiple disabilities
