CVI is the world’s leading cause of blindness in children, impacting at least 150,000 children in the US alone. With comprehensive assessment and effective educational programming, we can help kids with CVI access their world.
The CVI Center is developing a new, comprehensive CVI assessment system that reflects the most cutting-edge research and a whole-child focused approach, providing the best possible data and support for all children with CVI.
The Perkins CVI Protocol will be a digital assessment system and educational roadmap for the whole child. The CVI Protocol fills an important need in the field—it is a tool that supports every child, regardless of their manifestation of CVI, and teaches every professional, regardless of their prior knowledge of CVI.

Based on science and research
- The Perkins CVI Protocol is supported by current research from a variety of experts in the field to support each component of the protocol.
- To stay current and reflect the emerging CVI research and evolution of the field of CVI, The Perkins CVI Protocol will continue to reflect new and cutting-edge research at all levels of the process in the years to come.
A whole-child approach
The Perkins CVI Protocol will
- Comprehensively assess CVI visual behaviors and compensatory skills for optimal learning
- Look at the whole child including their motor, cognitive, behavior and social-emotional skills that influence learning.
- Be inclusive of the diverse manifestations of CVI
- Evaluate ways the individual functions based on visual skills, compensatory and sensory efficiency skills (auditory, tactile, kinesthetic), and other cognitive-based skills such as memory, prediction, shape coding and color coding to recognize the world around them.
- Create a series of reports that include an educational roadmap to help school teams develop appropriate educational programming for their students with CVI.
Embedded CVI learning
The Perkins CVI Protocol will include embedded CVI learning at every step to ensure all professionals, even those without a deep knowledge of CVI, are able to access and use this CVI protocol to best inform the most appropriate and effective educational programming for children with CVI.
