Perkins India continues to change the lives of children across India every day. Since the 1990s, we have provided technical expertise at a grassroots level to support teachers, schools, and NGOs to address the needs of children with multiple disabilities. We remain the primary resource for the education of children with multiple disabilities and vision impairment in India today.
Perkins India is backed by almost two centuries of global leadership and expertise in the field of blindness education from Perkins School for the Blind — a global trailblazer, convener, learning lab and champion for children with visual impairment and multiple disabilities, and the first school for the blind in the United States.
Perkins India partners with eye hospitals and local education organizations that serve as the nucleus of the services provided to children and families in the surrounding communities. We are breaking down barriers for children with disabilities by establishing new education programs, strengthening existing services, training healthcare and education professionals, and providing families with individualized support. Our goal is not just to make it possible for these children to enroll in school, but also ensure that the education they receive is meaningful and allows them to fulfill their potential and become a contributing member of society.
The Perkins India model is replicable and creates sustainable systems of support within state and local government that will endure for generations to come. While working across India, we focus intensive work in the state of Uttar Pradesh building the local capacity of programs through our local partners.
Perkins India has access to world-renowned experts from Perkins International, a division of Perkins School for the Blind. Perkins International has worked in almost 100 countries to educate and empower children with disabilities and their families.
Perkins International’s Educational Leadership Program (ELP) is a nine-month advanced training program for teachers of the visually impaired and other special education professionals from around the globe. Completing the ELP is transformational. Graduates return home as changemakers, equipped to enact major systemic, sustainable progress. ELP Graduates have a global impact on the lives of countless children with visual impairment, deafblindness and multiple disabilities.
