Introduction To Assessment

What is Assessment?

Assessment and evaluation are critical components of the special education process. Assessment is collecting and bringing together of information about a child’s need which may include social, psychological, and educational evaluations used to determine services; a process using observation, testing, and test analysis to determine an individual’s strengths and weaknesses in order to plan his or her educational services. In short, assessment is a systematic method of gathering information in order to describe functioning, determine needs and set priorities and goals.

Assessment involves gathering of information in many ways testing the child directly, observing the child in various environments as well as interviewing family members and significant others.

Why Do Assessments?

Assessment is done to develop the intervention programme.

The purpose of assessment is

  • To identify children with disabilities
  • To know what to teach and the best method to teach
  • To identify appropriate programmes and strategies
  • To select appropriate strategies and procedures
  • To classify and place the child in the appropriate programme.
  • To provide with the most appropriate amplification, vision and mobility aids and /or other prosthesis.
  • To be aware of strengths and weaknesses.
  • To develop an individual Education Plan (IEP)
