Abstract:
The Khogendra Das Clippings and Photographs Collection is comprised of photographs and copies of clippings of and about the Chan Poh Lin, her aid Wong Shui Sin, and her speech teacher Khogendra Das. One of the clippings is about the 1963 made for television movie, Journey of Poh Lin, while the other is about the marriage of Wong Shui Sin and Khogendra Das in 1964. The photographs feature Das, Poh Lin, and Shui Sin off campus and in the classroom.

Biographical/Historical notes:
Chan Poh Lin (1943-2016), later known as Theresa Chan, was referred to as the Helen Keller of Asia. Born in Singapore, Poh Lin became deaf and blind as a teenager after contracting meningitis. In 1960 she came to the United States to acquire an education at Perkins School for the Blind. She was a student at Perkins off and on until she returned to Singapore permanently in 1973. There she taught at the Singapore School for the Blind until 1990. Poh Lin received international media attention during her lifetime. She met Helen Keller in 1961 and attended Keller’s funeral in 1961. Poh Lin is the subject of a 1663 television drama titled “Journey of Poh Lin,” and In 2005 Poh Lin was featured as herself in the 2005 Singapore movie, “Be with Me.”

This collection documents the education of Chan Poh Lin at Perkins School for the Blind, her relationship with aid Wong Shui Sin and her speech teacher Khogendra Das, and media coverage about Poh Lin, and the marriage of Shui Sin to Das in 1964. The collection consist of 6 black and white photographs, circa 1960-1973, that feature Poh Lin, Shui Sin and Das. Photocopies and print outs of digital scans feature a newspaper article about the television movie Journey of Poh Lin and a newspaper clipping and photograph related to the marriage of Shui Sin and Das.
