Abstract:
The Centennial Literature collection consists of planning materials, correspondence, and publicity materials pertaining to the 1932 centennial celebration of Perkins Institution and Massachusetts School for the Blind, now known as Perkins School for the Blind. Documents in this collection are predominantly written to or from Gabriel Farrell, fourth Director of the Perkins Institution from 1931-1951.

Biographical/Historical notes:
Chartered in 1829 and opened in 1832, Perkins School for the Blind celebrated the centennial anniversary of its opening on November 9th and 10th in 1932. During this two day event, Perkins hosted reunions, guest speakers, demonstrations, and memorial exercises to commemorate the centenary of the institution’s opening.

Scope/Contents:
The collection documents the planning and proceedings of the 1932 centennial celebration of Perkins School for the Blind. It contains predominantly correspondence to and from Perkins Director, Gabriel Farrell, as well as planning materials, publications, and programs pertaining to the centennial event. The bulk of the collection is from 1932 through 1934 – before and after the centenary. The collection also includes materials from the semi-centennial event in 1882, a 1901 program from the anniversary of Samuel Gridley Howe’s birth, and correspondence with the New York Institute from 1931.
