Abstract:

Bettye Krolick was a musician, writer, philanthropist, and former President of the National Braille Association (NBA). The collection consists of papers, notes, correspondence, and published materials that she collected while writing the New International Manual for Braille Music Notation and Dictionary of Braille Music Signs.

Biographical/Historical notes:

Bettye Allerton Maxwell Krolick (1926-2011) was a musician, writer, and former President of the National Braille Association (NBA). Krolick graduated from the Eastman School of Music where she met her husband, Edward John Krolick. She played violin for the San Antonio Symphony, Champaign-Urbana Symphony, Springfield Symphony while they lived in Illinois and in the Fort Collins, Greeley, and Cheyenne orchestras after they moved to Colorado in 1983. She compiled the New International Manual for Braille Music Notation (1996) as well as several other books on braille music including Dictionary of Braille Music Signs (1979) and How to Read Braille Music (1998). She was elected president of the NBA in 1987 and served for two years. Krolick also won the American Foundation for the Blind’s Migel Medal Award in the volunteer category in 1997. She died in 2011 at the age of 85.

The Bettye Krolick collection contains 32 books in Russian Braille, 5 books in German Braille, 2 books in English Braille, 48 folders of Krolick’s research papers, 45 pamphlets in multiple braille languages, and 21 braille manuals in print which were used by Krolick when compiling the  New International Manual for Braille Music Notation (1996) and Dictionary of Braille Music Signs (1979).
