Life Planning for Young Adults with Disabilities

Join us Saturday, November 16, 2024 for a free, in-person transition event focused on building an effective life plan for young adults with disabilities. Hear from experienced parents and professionals who will share strategies for creating a plan that empowers young adults to lead self-determined lives. Learn the key pillars of a successful transition and how to develop actionable goals that align with students’ strengths and interests.

Designed for families and caregivers of young adults (14 – 23) and professionals, this interactive sessions will include:

  • The steps you need to take to plan for each year in the transition journey.
  • How to adapt and evolve life plans for your young adult’s changing needs.
  • Opportunity to connect with other parents and professionals about transition.

Transition Roadmap: A timeline for staying on track

Speaker: Ann Phelan

For parents of children with disabilities, staying organized throughout the transition process is critical. This period marks a significant shift in responsibility, resources, and support systems, and careful planning is essential to ensure a smooth transition. Learn key action steps needed at various milestones along the way.

Flexible Futures: Designing an evolving life plan

Speaker: Brett Skloff and Mike Weiner

Planning a life is a process, not an event. It should be your expectation that even the best laid plans, will need to evolve over time as you and your child’s needs change. Embrace the process and learn strategies to plan for a financially stable future.

11:30 am – 12:30 pm

From IEPs to Independence: One mom’s playbook

Speaker: Stacey Jackson

Stacey will share her parental journey becoming her daughter’s advocate and ally and later, helping her daughter create a self-determined life on her own terms.

12:30 pm – 1:00 pm

Networking and questions

We’ll conclude with an interactive lunch session, recap the morning’s highlights, and open the floor for a Q&A. Attendees will have a chance to dive deeper into any topics discussed by our speakers, and connect with other families and professionals.
