Reader 

Description: Many of Perkins' students have some vision, but not enough to enable him/her to read material independently. Often they need help with class assignments that require heavy reading and/or writing. A profile of the student is provided to the reader, as is the name and telephone number of the case manager responsible for overseeing his/her student's program.

Program: Secondary

Time Commitment: Reading sessions range from one to two hours per week. Some students may have difficulty comprehending materials and will need additional periodic review.

More Information: Readers volunteer to communicate written or printed materials to students who are taking academic classes and have assignments to complete. Materials to be read range in format from textbooks to consumer magazines. A reader may sometimes be asked to assist in writing materials for the student. Some students may need help researching materials in the local library; volunteers may accompany the student after staff approval.
