The Best Camp Ever
Jaimi had a great time trying new things and making new friends at the Seabeck Deafblind Retreat. She wrote this story about her experience.
Camp was very accessible and focused on the deaf-blind world. I had three Support Service Providers for the week, one in the morning another SSP in the afternoon, and then another for the evening. All were highly trained to work with deaf-blind people
The week was filled with fun activities such as sailing on motor boats, swimming, and biking on tandem and regular bikes. I held my hands under hot wax for hot wax therapy, and also had a massage at the spa. In the evenings, we had dances where we wore colorful costumes. Other deaf-blind campers did skits where they told funny stories with silly gestures. We also went to various workshops such as technology and crafts, where I learned to make soap for the first time. We were supposed to go parasailing but it was canceled because of strong winds.
I also had a chance to do some touring. I went on a huge ferry boat to Seattle’s Pike Place waterfront, where I visited the market and walked around downtown Seattle. I also went to Paulsbo Village and admired the many cute shops. I enjoyed a delicious lunch at a restaurant by the water.
Every morning after breakfast, my friends and I walked to a cute coffee shop for delicious coffee. I enjoyed talking with them on the porch by the river and feeling the wonderful cool breeze. I could even smell the sea.
The meals were homemade and very healthy and well balanced. We ate family style in a beautiful dining room, where we sat at tables covered with elegant tablecloths and china dishes. This was Seabeck’s 30th anniversary, so we had a banquet to celebrate. We were served salmon barbeque.
I spent my last day of camp hugging and exchanging e-mail addresses with my new friends.
What a lovely peaceful week I had at camp! I felt so special and left for home with a happy heart and good spirits. I will remember this wonderful camp week. This was my most favorite trip in my life.
