How About "Talking Books"?

Here I am again talking about books. I am sure, by now, you have all guessed I care about this subject just a little. I want to talk more about the ability to download NLS BARD books on to blank cartridges.

I want to stress how important reading is to staying part of life and being part of the world around us. We have so many books to choose from and there are public libraries filling our endless need to read. The Library of Congress provides access to thousands and thousands of books through the NLS BARD program. These books can be downloaded, saved, shared and studied over and over again.

Talking about books is one of the most wonderful activities a reader can take part in. There are book clubs and discussion groups spread around the world covering all topics and languages. If you are part of a book club with several visually impaired members, it is now easier than ever to get material for all the visually impaired readers. Readers who qualify for the talking book program can receive a digital player. One book club member or facilitator can download several copies of a book from the BARD website and share the cartridges with other members. Why not download a couple of other books by the same author? Remember, you can load several books on one cartridge.

Please visit our website and check out the new carrying cases for the NLS players.

How to Access the Bookshelf on Your Player

When you want to access the bookshelf from the player, you turn on the unit and hold down the play button for several seconds. You will hear a message telling you that you are on the bookshelf. You will then be able to move back and forth through your titles with the fast forward and rewind keys.

If you do not hear the bookshelf message, it probably means your unit is not running the most current software. Here is how you would check the software version number:

  • Remove the cartridge and turn on your unit.
  • Press and hold the play button and press the sleep button 10 times.
  • Keep holding the play button and you will hear the unit serial number followed by the version number.
  • If the version number is earlier than 2.1.3, you will need to update your system. If you are able to get to the internet, you can visit: http://www.loc.gov/nls/DTBM/
