Perkins Science Fair

Perkins student presents a project on Sir Isaac Newton

We love to see our students challenge themselves and get excited about science. On May 30th, students participated in the Second Annual Perkins Science Fair!

The theme for this year's Science Fair was "Meet the Scientists." Eleven students from the Chemistry and Introductory Physics classes selected a scientist to study, learning about his or her contributions to the scientific community and the world.

Students’ presentations told why they selected their scientists and what the world was like during the times those scientists lived. Hands-on models and colorful posters represented each scientist’s work. Two of the scientists whose lives and contributions were presented are working chemists who are blind. 

Dr. Amy Bower of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, among others, judged the students projects. Dr. Bower, who is legally blind, is an oceanographer who has worked for several years with Perkins students and collaborated with Perkins teacher Kate Fraser on an accessible science web site. Fraser accompanied Bower on a voyage to the Labrador Sea in September.
