From the President and the Board Chair
At Perkins, we are very familiar with the power of possibility.
For more than 180 years, we’ve worked hard to share that perspective with the world. Our teachers and advocators have broken through barriers. Our students have pushed themselves to reach new heights. Our partners have brought education, empowerment and awareness to thousands of individuals around the globe.
Yet, looking back on the accomplishments of this past year, once again we are humbled to see its limitless nature realized so profoundly. We took to heart the words of our 2010-2015 Strategic Plan, which charged us with reaching more people and spreading possibility in more places. Together, with your help, we made it come alive.
In just twelve months, the face of our campus has changed dramatically. We celebrated three openings that advanced the way we teach our students and elevated our ability to share our expertise with partners around the world. Students settled into the new Lower School and began the first of many school years to come in a state-of-the-art educational environment. We unveiled the Patti and Mike Cataruzolo Independent Living Apartments where young adults will have the opportunity to practice life skills and gain the tools and confidence they need to succeed on their own. And we dedicated the Grousbeck Center for Students & Technology, a building that promises to unite students and educators on campus and across the world through unprecedented opportunities for social interaction, the sharing of ideas and the spreading of knowledge.
But we didn’t stop there. We increased the number of students we teach on campus. We distributed Perkins Braillers® in more than 170 countries where literacy will change lives. We trained more educators, translated and distributed materials and resources, and advocated around the globe for the rights of all individuals to an education. We increased the number of lives we impact annually to more than 200,000 – a growth of nearly 42 percent from this time last year.
All this in a year when the economy was against us.
Possibility continues to teach us. It urges us to never take no for an answer, to always push for what may seem insurmountable. Just as possibility has once again redefined the reach of Perkins, so has it transformed the lives of the very people that inspire our mission. We hope you will take a moment to read in the pages that follow just what possibility means to a few members of the Perkins family. For each of them, possibility means something very different; yet, it is the common thread that drives them to move forward and seek the fruition of their potential.
And so, with this renewed perspective on the boundless nature of possibility and deep pride in the dedication of our educators, families, students, volunteers and partners, we turn with open minds and eager hearts to the new year. Together, we’re ready to embrace all that possibility can – and most assuredly will – bring.
Warmly,

Steven M. Rothstein
President

Frederick M. Clifford
Chair of the Board
Possibility is...
Unlocking her potential
Our daughter Gavi’s brain was deprived of oxygen during birth. The impact was devastating. We had no idea; nothing can prepare you for something like that as a parent. It’s an indescribable feeling of isolation, of fear and helplessness. Blindness is only one of her many challenges. We wondered: Would our daughter ever walk or talk? What would her future be like? Would we survive it together?
Then, when she was six months old, a social worker from Perkins walked into our home. She picked up Gavi and held her. She saw her. And she renewed our hope. At her urging, we joined the parent group at the Infant/Toddler Program – a place where mothers and fathers of children with special needs share stories and find strength in companionship. It was also a weekly opportunity for Gavi to work with trained educators. It turned out to be exactly what we needed as a family – a true lifeline.
Thanks to Perkins and the parents we met, we now have the strength we need to accompany Gavi on this journey of discovery. We still don’t know what the future holds for our daughter – for our family – but we have the courage to face it together.
You know how they say it takes a village? Well, Perkins is our village. Our home away from home.
Highlights
- Thanks to a generous grant from The Peabody Foundation, Inc., the Educational Partnerships Program expanded its outreach to local hospitals, connecting with medical professionals to advocate the importance of early referral of children who are blind or visually impaired. Through these efforts, Educational Partnerships also provided direct care to children who were newly blinded or had traveled to the U.S. for medical procedures from countries including Greece, Romania, Albania, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates.
- We welcomed students into the new Lower School with spacious classrooms, accessible features and state-of-the-art technology that will lay the groundwork for the highest quality educational experiences possible. Renovation work on the original structure will preserve its historical architecture and transform it into residential space, independent living apartments for select students, guest rooms for parents and administrative offices.
- We acquired WonderBaby.org, a website designed to offer support and real-life advice to parents and caregivers of children with disabilities. Created by Perkins parent Amber Bobnar after the birth of her son Ivan, who has a rare retinal disorder, WonderBaby.org’s offerings include a database of articles written by parents who want to share their experiences raising, playing with and teaching children who are blind.
- Perkins received its first major grant from the Lions Clubs International Foundation for work in education and rehabilitation. Thanks to SightFirst Program funds, we have partnered with local organizations to focus on the Philippines’ Luzon region. With the help of Resources for the Blind, Inc. and Parent Advocates for Visually Impaired Children, we will expand educational opportunities for children and empower parents as advocates for their children’s rights.
Possibility is...
Tapping my inner strength
My grandmother lost her eyesight when she was 83. I was only 14 at the time, but I saw all the troubles she had. It was a real turning point for me. I thought, if she is struggling so much, what could the world be like for a person who is born without sight? I found a job teaching at a local school in Chennai, India, for teenagers who are deafblind, but I wanted to learn more. When Perkins called and told me I had been accepted to the Educational Leadership Program, I couldn’t believe my ears. The invitation to live and work on this campus, learning from mentors and gaining real-life experience with students, was truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
The positive energy the educators have here is amazing. The exposure to their innovation, expertise and enthusiasm has inspired me to become a better teacher and try new things in my classroom.
In India, there is very little awareness about deafblindness. Teaching children with special needs is a very rarely chosen field. But I Iove it. One of my students back home wants to be an astronaut. Another wants to be a scientist. And I have started dreaming for them. Someday, I’d like to open a school in one of our villages for the children who are deafblind.
I believe that every person who is blind or deafblind has the right to live the way they want. I just want to open the doors for them.
Highlights
- The Educational Leadership Program trained 12 participants from 10 countries around the world. The Program’s curriculum included academic courses led by our experts and other noted professionals, hands-on learning in Perkins’ classrooms and living quarters, observation of other special education models in the New England area, and the opportunity to audit university graduate courses.
- Perkins International cosponsored the 5th Africa Forum in partnership with Sightsavers International, the World Blind Union and the Norwegian Association of the Blind and Partially Sighted. The historic gathering of 400 individuals marked the most successful pan-African conference dedicated to the empowerment of people living with blindness and visual impairment.
- Access to education continues to expand in the Asia/Pacific region, especially in poorly served and hard-to-reach areas. Our local program partnerships increased by nearly 25 percent, including the establishment of seven new early intervention programs in greater Bandung, Indonesia, where 97 children with visual impairment from birth through age 5 are now receiving services. We also supported the development and translation of several training and resource materials, and made them available to professionals, caregivers, families and universities.
- Perkins Products has supported the repair of more than 3,200 Perkins Braillers® in East Africa through the Kilimanjaro Blind Trust over a period of three and a half years.
- Perkins International has continued to support rebuilding efforts in Haiti through its partnerships with St. Vincent’s Center for Handicapped Children in Port-au-Prince and the Haitian Association for the Blind and Partially Sighted. In addition to shipping Perkins Braillers, embossers, paper and supplies, Perkins is also focusing on training teachers, providing tuition support for students and expanding community-based rehabilitation services.
Possibility is...
Giving him the tools
to compete
When Campbell was young, Wyc and I promised each other that we would expose him to all kinds of technology. Because computers are an equalizer. There’s no handicap on the Web. When we look at Campbell, we see a bright, intelligent young man who is capable of accomplishing just as much as his sighted peers, given the same educational opportunities.
Technology helps him connect to the world. And that’s the idea behind the Grousbeck Center for Students & Technology. Here, Perkins will fully integrate technology into the culture of education, permanently elevating the quality and relevance of the experience that Campbell and his friends, and students who come for years after them, will take from this campus. We wanted a place where they will want to hang out. Where they can socialize, meet for coffee, listen to a game on the big screen. Where they’ll log on to Facebook, or update their Twitter account. We want them to be immersed in the vernacular of the moment, interacting like teenagers do anywhere else. We want them to have a space to practice life. What goes on in this building will transform the lives of children who are blind around the world.
Thanks to technology, Campbell can explore the world just like any other kid. That’s what gives me hope for his future: giving him the tools he needs to compete.
Highlights
- Perkins put iPads, SMART Tables and laptop computers into the hands of students, thanks to donors at the 2011 Perkins Possibilities Gala who gave nearly $153,000 to the Technology Challenge.
- We set the groundwork for a student-run Internet radio station at the Grousbeck Center for Students & Technology. A tremendous creative outlet and hands-on learning environment for students, the project will be supported in partnership with trained experts from Berklee College of Music in Boston, Mass. The station is one of many brand-new opportunities for vocational experience at the Center, including jobs working at the café and supporting the Training Center’s conferences and events.
- Our work to develop web-based professional development through distance learning has received support from several generous donors including $25,000 from SAP America, Inc.
- We launched the Educator Series email subscription, an opportunity for teachers around the world to receive monthly installments of information from Perkins including publications, author interviews, webcasts and other resources useful for working with students with visual impairments and additional disabilities.
- Professionals all over the country earned Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP) credits and Professional Development Points (PDPs) by watching Perkins webcasts and completing short tests confirming their participation. Our growing roster of webcasts addresses topics ranging from adapted physical education to CHARGE syndrome.
Possibility is...
Preparing for tomorrow
It’s pretty cool here. The classes really challenge me. Right now in chemistry we’re learning about the composition of atoms. It’s hard to imagine something so small, but we used paper cups and marbles to build tactile models of protons and electrons.
My other classes are great, too. My favorite is English. We just finished reading Huckleberry Finn.
I have a lot of friends here, and I’m becoming more independent. I stay Tuesday and Wednesday nights in Brooks Cottage on campus, and I get to practice things like doing laundry, grocery shopping and cooking. It feels good to do those things myself. I play sports, too. I’ve been on the swim and wrestling teams, and I run track and play goal ball. And on Mondays, I go and clean tables in the cafeteria at Doble Engineering just down the street. It’s my first job, actually. It’s hard work, but I really like it.
I’m going to get my diploma here, and then I want to go to college. Someday, I’d like to be a special education case manager for students with individual education plans. Possibility means that anything can happen to me at any time in my life. Whatever it is, I’m going to be ready for it.
Highlights
- We launched our new transition programming, designed to prepare students for their lives as integrated, contributing members of their community after their experience at Perkins.
- Thanks in part to a grant from The Boston Foundation, which committed $240,000 over a period of three years, we created a new position to lead our cooperative employment programming for students ages 19 to 22 and establish more vocational opportunities for these young adults.
- We dedicated the new Patti and Mike Cataruzolo Independent Living Apartments, where more students will practice life skills with a minimal level of supervision in preparation for life as independent adults.
- Outreach Services conducted its first Summer Sports & Fitness Program, funded in part by the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust. The program’s goal is to educate public school students who are blind or visually impaired about accessible sports, and to motivate them to lead healthy lifestyles.
- The Braille & Talking Book Library launched Perkins Shared Electronic Files Project (SHELF), allowing patrons to download audio books that were produced in our recording studio. Committed to addressing the growing popularity of e-readers and downloadable books, the Library is converting thousands of titles into digital format, which readers can access by visiting www.Perkinslibrary.org.
- From college students and families, to individuals and corporations, volunteers flooded through our campus gates and gave 44,500 hours of their time to support our programs and events.

Visionary Society
Three of the most beautiful words in the English language are: “I can help.” Those are words we hear all the time from members of our Visionary Society. By making current use gifts of $1,000 or more, they fund vital programs and services that help children and adults who are blind or visually impaired lead productive, meaningful lives. We offer heartfelt thanks for their steadfast support.

Corporations, Foundations, Government & Organizations
The foundations, government agencies, corporations and other organizations that support Perkins every year, as well as our implementing partners, are indispensible in our work. Their restricted and unrestricted gifts, support, and on-the-ground collaborative efforts make possible a variety of new programs and daily operations, and help promote increased independence for people who are blind. We thank them, once again, for believing in our students’ futures.

Perkins Possibilities Gala Sponsors
A tent full of hope, more than 600 delighted guests, delectable food and a surprise appearance by a legendary Boston musician. That was the formula for the 2011 Perkins Possibilities Gala, which raised more than $1.5 million. Lynn Hoffman of VH1 Classic served as emcee, comedian Lenny Clarke of “Rescue Me” conducted the live auction, and Peter Wolf of the J. Geils Band performed with backing vocals from the Perkins student chorus. Our deepest thanks to all.

2010 Taste of Perkins
There is not a more delicious way to make a difference than by attending the Taste of Perkins. More than 170 people did that in 2010 – and spent a delightful evening enjoying food and wine tastings while blindfolded, exploring our historic museum and helping us raise funds for important programs. Thank you to everyone who lifted a fork to support Perkins.

2011 Marathon Team Donors
A 26.2-mile race doesn’t begin with a single step. It begins with a goal. For the 20 members of our 2011 Boston Marathon® charity team, that goal was to raise more than $80,000 to help people with visual impairments. We thank our runners who pounded the pavement from Hopkinton to Boston, and all their supporters whose generosity helped propel them across the fundraising finish line.

Vocational Opportunities
The community organizations and corporations that welcome our students into the workplace understand that learning goes far beyond the classroom. Thanks to their participation, students have a chance to tackle the challenges of holding a job – and double their shot at success as an independent, contributing adult in the real world. From a far-flung school in a village of Chittagong, Bangladesh, to an international corporation with headquarters around the world, we are working together to change what it means to live with blindness. We invite you to visit www.Perkins.org/Partners to view our ever-growing list of more than 400 nonprofit organizations, school districts, universities, corporations, government agencies, associations and distributors around the globe that share our mission. We hope it will help you understand just how widespread this belief in possibility has become and encourage you to join us in pursuing it.
