The Perkins 2009 Annual Report
Investing In The Future
A foundation for the next 100 years.
That's what Perkins endeavored to create when it announced two major initiatives on campus this year. The Lower School project is a $30 million undertaking that includes construction of a new building to house accessible classrooms and renovation of the original, century-old building for residential and office space. The Grousbeck Center for Students and Technology, Perkins' first campus-wide location for student recreation and state-of-the-art technology, was initiated with a $10 million commitment from the Grousbeck Family Foundation that will leverage another $15 million in funding for program, staff and technology infrastructure. These two projects will prepare Perkins to serve the needs of students and teachers for many years to come. Because 180 years of success is no reason to stop reaching higher.

A Message from the President and the Board Chair
Our Annual Report is traditionally a document of reflection - an opportunity to look back at the fiscal year and celebrate our growth and accomplishments, while using those milestones to set our next goals.
This year, some things are different.
At a time of worldwide economic challenges, we have been moving forward with several exciting initiatives that will benefit individuals far into the next generation. Our campus is poised for a major shift in the coming year with all eyes set on the future - investing in our students, their families and all others whom our services and programs touch. The year 2010 will see the transformation of campus with ongoing construction of a new Lower School and planning for the Grousbeck Center for Students and Technology.
We recently broke ground on the Lower School project which will construct a new, modern building with state-of-the-art technology for classrooms and a generous auditorium, while retrofitting our historic Lower School structure into an accessible space for residential cottages and office space. We are also working on the designs for the new Grousbeck Center for Students and Technology. Initiated with a $10 million commitment from the Grousbeck Family Foundation, this location will offer students a social gathering place. It will also be a place for them, their educators and educators from around the world to learn about the latest technology. This will give our students, their families and our partners in the US and throughout the globe an advantage in the real world.
We will also continue working to spread education and literacy around the world with the help of our Perkins' partners and the distribution of our Next Generation BraillerTM, an update on the classic version that is easier to use than ever.
We'd like to take this opportunity to welcome our newest Board members, Katherine Chapman and Richard Reilly. We also want to acknowledge Vice Chairwoman Linda DiBenedetto, who will retire from the Board after 17 years of tireless work to make this institution the best it can be.
We also want to note the remarkable contributions from the staff, volunteers, trustees, donors, families and other friends. You are all vital members of the Perkins family.
At Perkins, we know that building a future means so much more than simply preparing for what lies ahead. It is anticipating the changing world - what might be possible in the coming decades, and what challenges we must overcome to get there. It is redefining what is possible for individuals who are blind, visually impaired or deafblind. We continue to trust that believing in possibility will guide us down the right path.
Thank you for all that each of you do to support this essential mission.
Sincerely,
Steven M. Rothstein, President

Frederic M. Clifford, Chair of the Board
Promising a Future

From the very first moment.
That’s how quickly Perkins is poised to respond – as soon as we learn a child is born who could benefit from our skilled therapists, counselors and educators. Thanks to the advances of science and medicine, doctors today are saving more babies who are or may become visually impaired, blind or deafblind with other disabilities. We work with area hospitals to reach out to new families every week to provide resources, information and possibility. We travel to children’s homes to counsel and support their parents while taking the first steps to help their young ones develop. And we open our doors to infants, toddlers and kindergarten-age children to introduce them to a school experience adapted especially for them. The sooner we connect children with services, the faster possibility can grow. Because there’s no reason to keep a brighter future waiting.
PROMISING highlights:
- The Infant/Toddler Program continued working to increase early referrals of babies who are visually impaired or deafblind from neonatal intensive care units at Boston-based hospitals, as well as increase outreach and awareness of Perkins’ resources to family-practice and pediatric residents and neurology staff.
- Perkins welcomed dozens of young ones, their parents and their siblings for a series of Summer Play Dates, an event organized for the sole purpose of having fun. Conceived of by veteran teacher Harriet Ward, the goal was to help families – typically busy running from one doctor’s appointment to the next – to simply reconnect and relax.
- The family-centered focus at our Early Learning Center ensured that parents received just as much support, nurturing and care as their young ones, with support groups on campus and home visits designed to involve parents in their children’s growth and development.
- The Educational Partnerships Program concluded a three-year project for infant/toddler groups in the New Bedford region. Made possible by a grant from the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust, the program extended Perkins’ presence in the South Shore and connected more families with Perkins’ services.
Exploring the Future

An opportunity to practice self-advocacy.
That’s what Cory Kadlik had in mind when he accepted the challenge to achieve a new, higher level of independent living on campus this year. With as little as three hours per week of assistance from an instructor – which Kadlik is responsible for prioritizing – he is gaining the confidence to solve each day’s challenges on his own or request assistance when necessary. The experience will provide Kadlik and the other Perkins students who will come after him with the critical training and preparation essential to succeed in the real world. Because sometimes independence is not only knowing yourself, but knowing when to ask for help.
EXPLORING Highlights:
- A new Technology Weekend organized by Outreach Services Short Courses gave public school students who are blind a chance to dissect computers, examine state-of-the-art adaptive equipment and practice with talking Global Positioning Systems – exposing them to the latest assistive technology available.
- Our Adapted Physical Education and Health Services programs launched a Healthy Living Initiative last year, funded by the Tufts Health Plan Foundation, which will implement new ways for Perkins students and staff to make health-conscious food and lifestyle choices and introduce more activity – on campus and off – into their schedule. A new after-school program also offered students opportunities including Pilates, rowing, yoga, bowling and more to help them discover new, healthy habits for life.
- From coaching sports to recording books on tape and building assistive devices for students, our volunteers play a major role in Perkins’ daily accomplishments. In total, volunteers devoted more than 63,700 hours to our school, spreading community spirit wherever they served.
- The Perkins Training Center kicked off a three year program to offer professional development to hundreds of New York state educators of students who are blind and visually impaired. The trainings, made possible by a generous grant from The Starr Foundation, marks the first time the Training Center expanded to New York.
Planning for the Future

A refusal to compromise.
That’s what our clients choose when they turn to Perkins for help adapting to life with vision loss. We teach individuals age 55 and older how to cook with confidence in the kitchen, how to maneuver safely around their home and community, how to handle money and pay bills and other strategies to maintain an independent lifestyle. We also offer in-home evaluations, training and consultation to local residents as well as classes such as group exercise, book clubs, gardening and historical walking tours to help people stay active and connected to their community. Because vision impairment shouldn’t mean missing out on life’s adventures.
PLANNING Highlights:
- The National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped named Perkins Braille & Talking Book Library the 2008 Network Library of the Year, acknowledging its innovative programming as well as patron satisfaction and standard for excellence. The Library circulated nearly 443,000 books and magazines to more than 27,000 patrons across Massachusetts and to several states across the nation.
- Focused on the goal of putting our educational strategies, techniques and first-hand experience in the hands of all those who need them, Perkins launched Scout, an information clearinghouse on blindness and visual impairment. We also filmed multiple webcasts and unveiled our Accessible Science microsite, both new resources to educators, parents and caregivers.
- The New England Eye Low Vision Clinic at Perkins continued to use its expertise and first-hand experience to improve vision care for individuals around the country, sending staff to speak at national conferences about the Perkins model of care, training optometrists at our comprehensive eye care clinic and caring for our own students, community clients and patients throughout New England. Low Vision Clinic staff continues to conduct research in the areas of visual fields and vision services for people with multiple impairments.
- Our Strategies for Life services taught individuals age 55 and older techniques to cope with their vision loss and continue living independently, from individualized training in mobility to group cooking classes. Thanks to a new partnership with the Visiting Nurse Association of Boston, staff trained health care providers to promote a higher level of activity and independence for their patients with visual impairment.
Shaping the Future

A commitment to spreading possibility.
That pledge spans the miles between Perkins and its many partners around the globe who work every day towards a or visually impaired with multiple disabilities with life-changing resources, information and solutions. We put Perkins Braillers® and other technology into the hands of students to give them an advantage in their quest for an education. We train teachers on campus and around the world with the help of our international partners to encourage new ideas and educational strategies. We empower families and communities to advocate for better services for those in need. Together, we are working to strengthen the next generation by opening doors to education and promoting the importance of human rights for all, no matter where a person lives. Because the future of the world depends upon it.
SHAPING Highlights:
- Perkins President Steven Rothstein and International Director Sergei Sorokin traveled to Geneva, Switzerland, in November 2008 to participate in UNESCO’s International Conference on Education to work toward the organization’s “Education for All” initiative. Perkins also distributed a new position paper titled “Advancing Education for All Children who are Blind or Visually Impaired with Multiple Disabilities” to Ministry of Education officials from around the world.
- Based on the solid foundation and success of Perkins International and its Hilton/Perkins Program, we established new commitments to improve educational services for children who are deafblind or visually impaired with multiple disabilities in Latin America, Africa, Asia and Central and Eastern Europe.
- Thanks to a partnership between Perkins Products and International Relief and Development, 20 Perkins Braillers® were shipped to the Al Noor School for the Blind in Baghdad in October 2008, along with paper, a dictionary and a supply of sunglasses. The effort was so well received, the partnership coordinated a second delivery which arrived in the fall of 2009.
- An unprecedented number of master’s degree certifications were awarded last year to teachers in Latin America, thanks to Perkins’ partners who continue to develop new curricula to address the educational needs of children who are deafblind and visually impaired with multiple disabilities.
Perkins International Education Programs

This map illustrates the powerful reach that Perkins, in conjunction with its hundreds of partners worldwide, has across the globe, serving 63 countries and growing every year. In addition to our direct services, Perkins works to spread literacy with our Next Generation Perkins Braillers® and other products that make reading and writing possible for many who are blind and deafblind. We also share knowledge by training teachers and educators from all over the world who then bring those strategies and techniques home, spreading possibility for a brighter future for all.

Building a brighter future for everyone we serve is a mission we take seriously every day. That mission would be impossible without your support. In so many ways, you are a part of the future we build – by giving, you set the example for others and pave the way for us to continue to provide services and education for the years ahead.
In fiscal year 2009, Perkins raised $20,110,143 to help people who are blind, visually impaired and deafblind in 63 countries around the world. Our thanks goes out to the 19,266 individuals, foundations, charitable groups and more who helped us create a brighter future for more than 114,000 people.
These pages are set aside to honor the generous donors of all gifts, pledges and pledge payments of $500 or more that helped us on our mission to build a brighter future for so many.
Individuals

Thanks to these individuals, the future is so much brighter for the thousands of people Perkins reaches every year. Your vision makes our work possible, whether on campus, in the community or in any of the 63 countries we have partnered with around the world.

Perkins Possibilities Gala Sponsors

The 2009 Perkins Possibilities Gala was a success in every way, with WBZ-TV’s Lisa Hughes serving as emcee, WEEI Radio’s Glenn Ordway heading the auction and Natalie Merchant filling the air with song as the surprise musical guest. The Gala surpassed its fundraising goals for the fifth consecutive year in a row, raising $1.25 million. We gratefully acknowledge those who contributed that evening to continue to make all things at Perkins possible.

The Thomas H. Perkins Legacy Society

There are so many ways Perkins can and does change lives on a daily basis. By making our school the beneficiary of a will, trust, retirement plan or life insurance policy, the members of the Thomas H. Perkins Legacy Society chose to make an equally generous gift – in return for an education, in memory of a loved one or simply to give. Thanks to all these individuals who chose to support us.

Matching Gift Companies

As Helen Keller observed, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” The truth of that statement is so evident when it comes to these companies who chose to lead by example – giving, and, in doing so, encouraging others to do the same. We thank these companies for working with us to help bring services and education to many, many more people than we would have been able to serve alone.

Vocational Placement

Every aspect of an education at Perkins is geared toward showing our students and clients a better future. One of the most critical parts of that preparation is the chance to have real-world job experience – an internship at a local business, or a part-time job after school in a hospital or zoo. We thank these organizations who opened their doors and their hearts to our students, bringing them that much closer to success in the real world.
