A Message from the Board Chair
This past year, our 179th, has been one of milestones in many ways. Some of our initiatives have been building on prior accomplishments and others have been new approaches to address critical needs. A few of the creative responses we offered this year include:
- Our acquisition of Adaptive Technology Consulting, Inc. to expand adaptive technology services.
- Our research and design of the Next GenerationTM Perkins Brailler® the first new design in nearly 60 years.
- Our expansion of Perkins on-line resources to reach as many people as possible.
In reflecting upon the vast achievements of 2008, it is critical to acknowledge the numerous staff, trustees, volunteers, donors, families and friends that have helped us reach out to over 94,000 people the world over, transforming lives and giving hope back to many. Thank you to those who have given so much to make things possible.
Finally, it is with mixed emotion that I note this is my final message to you as Board Chair. This is a remarkable organization and it has been a unique privilege to serve in this role. I am looking forward to remaining on the board and am proud to turn the role of Chair to Frederic M. Clifford. Fred has been a member of the Board since 1986 and has a life long connection with Perkins. Fred’s extensive experience and commitment will insure that Perkins will be under strong leadership for the years to come.
Sincerely,

Janet B. James
A Message from the President
At Perkins School for the Blind we know that every child and their family have hopes for what may be and we believe that those hopes can be realized. Each student that comes to our school is unique. Knowing that, our staff creates individualized lesson plans for each student.
Our belief in what is possible for individuals who are blind and deafblind extends through our wide range of community services. These include professional training efforts, library services, our products and in the 63 countries around the world where we partner with other organizations to help children and others who are blind, deafblind, or blind with other disabilities so that they too may realize that which is possible.
We are only able to achieve the results outlined in this Annual Report through the remarkable efforts of so many people. I would particularly like to acknowledge Janet James who has served as Chair of the Board of Trustees for the past four years and has devoted countless hours. Janet has always believed in our mission, our staff and the many individuals that we serve. It has been an unparalleled privilege to work alongside her as Chair and I look forward to continue working with her on the board.
To every one of you who help us champion educational services and resources for those we serve we are grateful. We rely on you every day.
Thank you,

Steven M. Rothstein
HOPE drove the Bobnars from Hawaii to Watertown to seek services for a son born with a rare eye disease. Today, 3-year-old Ivan attends Perkins and his parents are helping others locate resources by sharing their story on their "WonderBaby" website, one of many resources you can link to from Perkins’ Information Clearinghouse.
"I never gave up hope that we would find the help we needed and that Ivan would learn and flourish."
–Amber Bobnar
HOPE Highlights
- Armed with hope for what they could achieve, 200 day and residential students learned from the best teachers, clinicians, therapists, and counselors everywhere on campus.
- Almost 4,100 family members, friends, and educators looking for inspiration turned to the Perkins Research Library and DB link for helpful information on supporting people who are deafblind; our online Information Clearinghouse is a 24/7 resource.
- Hundreds came to Perkins’ conferences for families who have children of all ages who are blind. These ranged from our 25th conference for our youngest children to our first for older students aiming to live on their own.
- Perkins Products conducted exhaustive international user research that resulted in the launch of the Next GenerationTM Perkins Brailler® in October of 2008. The new brailler is lighter, more portable, and easier to use thanks to revolutionary engineering accomplished over the past year. Learn more at www.perkinsbrailler.org.
- Over 27,000 children and adults in New England received free audio, braille and large print books from the Perkins Braille & Talking Book Library. A new digital format for audio books enabled borrowers to download 2,900 books, while the Library’s Newsline service, with 250 newspapers by phone, provided almost two million minutes of listening time for 2,000 individuals.
Perkins teacher, Terri Werner, BELIEVED wholeheartedly in the ability of art appreciation to enrich the lives of students. Prior to her passing last year, she organized Feeling for Form with Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts. The program culminated with a student exhibit, Seeing What I Feel, at the MFA.
"Perkins School for the Blind believes that art is for everyone."
-Terri Werner
BELIEF Highlights
- Building on Perkins Strategic Plan 2005-2010, we continued our commitment to and belief in technology. On April 1, Perkins became New England’s largest reseller and trainer in adaptive technology upon acquiring Adaptive Technology Consulting, currently known as Adaptive Technology, a Division of Perkins Products. We now offer over 500 low and high tech solutions.
- The Perkins Training Center helped almost 3,800 teachers and other professionals deepen their knowledge in the specialties of blindness education.
- Volunteers gave 41,400 hours helping to make a difference in classrooms, offices, libraries, and in the community with their faith in those we serve.
- We recommitted ourselves to being the teacher of teachers by expanding our online resources with the development of on-demand educational webcasts and increased web content giving more resources to those who believe, as we do, that anything is possible with the right support.
- Committed to increasing the ability of international local populations to provide their own services, we trained more than 8,800 professionals around the globe working with children who are blind or deafblind.
POSSIBILITIES for Children/Philippines is reshaping education and rehabilitation services for children with visual impairment and multiple disabilities. The organization has provided services and subsidized vital therapy to thousands of children and trained nearly 2,000 teachers, university students, and family members. With support from Perkins, parents are seeing new-found possibilities.
"Most of all, we felt that we are not alone… that made us once again to build a dream."
-Parent of a deafblind child
POSSIBILITY Highlights
- 130 students and coaches from six states saw only possibility as they gathered at Perkins to compete in the 62nd Annual Eastern Athletic Association for the Blind (EAAB) Track & Field Tournament.
- In the spring of 2008, Perkins again earned its 10-year accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. Evaluators praised us for "creating a school where everything is possible and for its caring, interdisciplinary team approach to support each individual student in achieving his/her maximum potential."
- In May a U.S. Court of Appeals ruled that paper money with no distinguishing characteristics for people who are blind constitutes discrimination and ordered the U.S. Treasury to make paper currency accessible to all. Perkins was a leading voice in this national battle.
- The sky was the limit for the 217 public school students who attended Perkins short courses from ice-sledding to cooking to on-the-job training and Space Camp.
- Perkins International staff joined partners from around the world at the 14th Deafblind International (DBI) World Conference in Perth, Australia in September 2007.
The map reflects direct services to children, families, and professionals. Perkins School for the Blind also promotes literacy around the globe through Perkins Braillers and other products. In addition, for generations professionals have studied on the Perkins campus and then brought their expertise throughout the world.

Thank You!
At Perkins School for the Blind, we know that possibility is always there for our students. But, without financial support, it is hard to lay claim to it.
Over the past year, possibility, indeed, triumphed. In fiscal year 2008, Perkins raised $13,070,595 to help blind, deafblind, and visually impaired people in 63 countries. We thank all of the 20,964 individuals, corporations, foundations, and charitable groups who believed in our mission. Your generosity made hope a reality for more than 94,000 individuals.
In the following pages, we celebrate all outright gifts, pledges, and pledge payments of $500 or more that helped us achieve our goals.
2008 Perkins Possibilities Gala
On May 1, Perkins supporters proved once again that belief is a powerful tool for change. More than 550 people attended the 2008 Perkins Possibilities Gala, helping us raise more than $1.2 million. The evening was emceed by WBZ-TV’s Lisa Hughes and a one of a kind auction was managed by WEEI Radio’s Glenn Ordway. Perkins gratefully acknowledges the following individuals, corporations and foundations for making the evening a resounding success.

Visionary Society
The Visionary Society supports the most compelling tenet of Perkins’ mission: to provide education and services that help people who are blind, deafblind, or visually impaired to pursue dignified lives. Comprised of unrestricted gifts of $1,000 or more, this society is one of the most effective ways to extend hope, and we salute those who have put their faith in it.

Members support Perkins’ future by designating the school as the beneficiary of a will, trust, retirement plan, life insurance policy, life-income gift, or other deferred giving arrangement. We thank the following individuals for investing in the dignity of our students – today, tomorrow, and for years to come.

Head of the Charles Regatta®
On October 21, 2007 four friends of Perkins, Wycliffe Grousbeck and David Fialkow, along with two former national team rowers-Mary Mazzio and Cindy Matthes competed in the 43rd Head of the Charles Regatta in Cambridge. Their efforts raised over $200,000 in support of Perkins Technology Fund, which provides a variety of technologies and training that help level the playing field for our students.

In-Kind Gifts to Perkins
Food for an educational conference, paper for a publication, free admission to special events—throughout the year, Perkins depended heavily on the following individuals and groups for donations of time, goods, or services that allowed us to stretch cash donations a little further. We extend a heartfelt thanks to those in-kind donors whose contributions total close to half a million dollars.
