More Perkins Products Information

Other Perkins Products

In addition to the Perkins Brailler®, we provide other products for people who are blind.  Perkins slates are pocket-sized braille devices that allow users to manually punch individual braille dots into paper. The Perkins Panda® is a set of children's books and tapes that helps parents and teachers provide early literacy skills to children. Talking book products enhance the enjoyment of listening. Perkins' publications, many of which have been translated into multiple languages, provide information and resources for family members, teachers and community members.

In addition to the standard Perkins Brailler, we also offer other types of braillers to meet the needs of people with disabilities.

  • Perkins Light Touch Electric Braillers allows users to produce braille with minimal effort. Children and adults who have limited mobility and finger strengthen benefit from this type of brailler.
  • The Unimanual Brailler offers the same features as other Perkins Braillers along with the ability to produce braille with only one hand.
  • The Large Cell Brailler allows persons with tactile problems to read and produce braille.

Perkins product brochures are available in Chinese, English, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish

Perkins School for the Blind operates Perkins Brailler® assembly plants in the United States, India and South Africa. These assembly plants contribute to the independence of people with disabilities, since assembling and repairing braillers are a source of livelihood for many people. For instance, Perkins' Brailler Facility in South Africa has assembled more than 19,000 Perkins Braillers since its opening in 1997. The assembled braillers are distributed to schools and programs for people who are blind throughout South Africa, as well as other African countries. This facility also has created ten stable jobs. Three of these positions are held by persons with disabilities.

In India, Perkins partners with WORTH Trust, an organization dedicated to improving the lives of people with disabilities through education, vocational training, and employment. In addition to assembling Perkins Braillers, WORTH Trust manufactures other assistive devices and mobility aids for people with disabilities.

Brailler Repair

While Perkins Braillers® are made of the highest quality components and are known as the sturdiest braille writing machines available, they periodically need repairs. Especially in developing countries, dust, high humidity, and the heavy use of scarce braillers takes it toll. Thus, Perkins School for the Blind conducts periodic brailler repair training programs and establishes brailler repair networks in many countries around the world.
