Living Independently with Vision Loss

As we age, independence is one of our most precious resources. The 6-class course is designed for elders experiencing challenges in their daily life due to visual impairment.

The Living Independently with Vision Loss course will teach individuals different ways to accomplish tasks of everyday living. Students will be introduced to key techniques, adapted aids and resources to help them regain confidence and become as independent as possible. Classes will include lectures, hands-on learning activities and guest speakers sharing information about local services and resources. This class has been offered both on the Perkins campus and in local communities beyond the greater Watertown area.

Topics include:

  • Getting around safely
  • Personal and home care
  • Cooking and shopping
  • Writing, time and money
  • How to access resources

Eligibility requirements:

  • 55+ years of age or older with significant vision loss
  • Readiness to learn
  • Motivation to participate in all aspects of the curriculum
  • Availability and commitment to attend all 6 classes
