Tuesday Morning: Landscape Painting

Turn a blank canvas into an imaginary landscape. The painting technique will be based on the PBS program, The Joy of Painting, featuring Bob Ross. The class will be taught by Terri Werner, an art teacher at Perkins School for the Blind for the last 13 years. This class is for anyone with vision loss whether you have some sight or are totally blind. We are very excited to offer this class for the first time at the ELC! Class 10:00- Noon. Tuition: $60.00. Materials fee: $20.00.

Tuesday Afternoon: Book Club and World War II

Come share the history, the impact overseas, the impact at home, the impact on your own life and family. Were there recipes adapted due to rationing? Were you or a family member in the service?  How did your family contribute to the war effort? We will also read and discuss two books on tape related to World War II sent from the Braille and Talking Book Library. Class 1:00 – 3:00. Tuition: $60.

Thursday Morning: Crock Pot Cooking

Learn new kitchen skills while using a slow cooker, perfect as we say good bye to winter and welcome in spring! Keep warm while making soups and stews and other comfort foods.  Class 10:00- Noon. Eat lunch together at the end of class. Noon – 1:00. Tuition: $60. Materials fee: $10.

Thursday Afternoon: Quilting for Beginners Continued ...

The participants from the January/February session will complete their quilts, and, if time allows, work on a new sewing project. Participation in the Jan/Feb. session is required. Class 1:00-3:00. Tuition: $60.

Tuesday Morning: Cooking with Leftovers

Do you get tired of reheating the same thing every night? What if you could make a whole new meal out of your leftovers? You can save money and experience an endless array of dishes when you have the right ingredients. See how creative you can be while working on cutting, measuring and pouring skills. Class 10:00- Noon. Tuition: $60.00. Materials fee: $10.00.

Tuesday Afternoon: Literature and Film

In this class you will discuss three Talking Books you have listened to on your own and we will watch three Descriptive Videos based on the books. One week we will view a film. The next week we will discuss the book/film. Was the book better than the film? Was the film true to the book? How did they differ? Read Daphne du Maurier’s Jamaica Inn, a novel later made into a film by Alfred Hitchcock.  Revisit Harper Lee’s Pulitzer prize-winning novel, To Kill a Mockingbird paired with the movie starring Gregory Peck. Then read contemporary author, Tracy Chevalier’s Girl with a Pearl Earring, the 2004 film was nominated for 3 Oscars. Class 1:00 – 3:00. Tuition: $60.
 

Thursday Class- All Day: Walking the Emerald Necklace

One of Boston’s hidden treasures is the network of green space from the Back Bay Fens to the Franklin Park conceived of by Frederick Law Olmsted. Over the span of 6 weeks, we will walk the Emerald Necklace from beginning to end including a visit to the Franklin Park Zoo. Class 10:00 to 3:00 and held rain or shine. Tuition: $140.00. (Includes admission and transportation fees. Meals not included. Sometimes we will picnic. Sometimes we will eat out.) Participants must be able to walk 2 to 3 hours at a gentle but steady pace.

Location: The Elder Learning Center is located at 45 Beechwood Avenue in Watertown, on the campus of Perkins School for the Blind. Participants will be responsible for their own transportation. Staff can help to identify options.

Tuition: A $10.00 discount is offered for an additional class taken on the same day. If tuition poses a hardship, please discuss it with the staff. If you would like to make an additional donation, your gift will help others attend and would be welcome.
