COVER TITLE: A Shared Vision Perkins School for the Blind Annual Report 2006 INSIDE FRONT PAGE: Message from the Chair and the President Thank you for helping Perkins School for the Blind transform lives right here on campus, throughout the New England community and around the world. Everyday we hear the laughter of students and the sweep of their canes in the hallways. We know about students who are blind and attend public schools and are now able to keep up with studies because of weekly help from Perkins staff. We hear from deafblind children in developing countries thrilled to attend school for the first time because of the Hilton/Perkins Program. Everyday we hear from students, parents, and teachers that Perkins is the ultimate resource on the education of people who are blind. For every child walking or learning how best to navigate a wheelchair on campus, Perkins is helping thousands of others follow in those footsteps. 87,485 others to be exact. For every person turning to Perkins for help, we thank you, the entire Perkins family – staff, trustees, volunteers, donors, friends – for making Perkins the place that students and educators turn to for guidance. We thank you for your compassion, dedication and resources that make these successes possible. Sincerely, Janet B. James Steven M. Rothstein Chair of Perkins Board of Trustees President __________________________ PHOTO CAPTION: When you see a child learning to walk... At Perkins School for the Blind we believe in the dignity of every child, every adolescent, every student and every adult. Blindness, low vision, deafblindness and other disabilities do not define anyone. Are they obstacles? Yes. Can they be overcome? Of course. At Perkins School for the Blind, we help people on every step of their journey toward independence. Highlights – Campus, Community, Around the World • 350 parents and professionals came together for the New England Regional Seminar for Children with Visual Impairment, birth to age seven, often the first time families connect with other families who have children with visual impairment. • Perkins teachers worked with over 450 babies and toddlers in their homes. •The first Webcast of Parents' Day provided families with vital information from teachers, professionals and other parents. • The Perkins Chorus performed at the Massachusetts State House to raise awareness of the abilities of people who are blind. __________________________ PHOTO CAPTION: When you know her determination... Independence, no matter one's ability, is key to happiness. For some students at Perkins without verbal skills, independence is the ability to express themselves by pointing to pictures. For others it's flying through exams on the way to college. For everyone, it's a journey of willpower, persistence and arriving at places you have only imagined. Highlights – Campus, Community, Around the World • Over 100 students from five states competed at Perkins for the Eastern Athletic Association for the Blind (EEAB) Track and Field Tournament. • Perkins launched an External Technology Committee of industry leaders to assure that Perkins students are savvy in the best technology. • 21 companies and organizations provided Perkins students with internships to develop work skills. • Jaimi Lard, Perkins Spokesperson and alumna of the Deafblind Program, addressed over 10,000 at the Lions International Convention. She was the first person who is deafblind to address the Lions International Convention since Helen Keller did in 1925. • 550 stellar volunteers dedicated 32,536 hours in Perkins classrooms, cottages and elsewhere, considerably extending the reach of Perkins. __________________________ PHOTO CAPTION: When you witness her first day of school… In many parts of the developing world, children who are deafblind or blind with multiple disabilities are often considered unworthy of an education and forgotten. Because at Perkins we believe in the worth of everyone, we have helped develop 260 schools and programs for children who are deafblind or blind with multiple disabilities. With the ongoing support of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation and many other generous supporters, and partnering with schools, parents and governments, Perkins is transforming societies and ensuring that a child's dreams can become reality. Highlights – Campus, Community, Around the World • The Hilton/Perkins Program helped educate 9,677 deafblind children in 61 developing countries. • The Hilton/Perkins Program trained over 6,700 staff working with blind or deafblind children in developing countries. • We assisted 17,000 blind adults in Africa and trained 190 blind leaders. • Professionals from the developing world studied for a year at Perkins before returning home to join the 200 people trained at Perkins, establishing and growing programs and transforming lives. • Special Education officials from Australia, Greece, Israel, Japan, Turkey, South Africa, St. Lucia, Syria and many other countries visited Perkins to learn how they could improve the education of the blind or deafblind. • Howe Press, in partnership with Malawi Tomorrow, helped develop a country-wide model to distribute spare parts and to repair more than 200 Perkins Braillers ® in Malawi. • The drive for braille literacy continues through the over 9,000 people, schools and programs receiving Perkins Braillers ®, training and other materials in 143 countries. • Perkins Howe Press conducted Perkins Brailler® repair workshops in India, Malaysia and Boston. __________________________ PHOTO CAPTION: When you help him keep up with his class… You can find a Perkins education everywhere. In Massachusetts, we send teachers into public schools to enable children to keep up with and excel like their sighted peers. Throughout New England, we train teachers and other professionals who then bring their new knowledge to thousands of colleagues and students. Across the country and into the world we provide publications in English, Spanish and other languages to support teachers bringing out the best in their students. In 1829, Perkins was a novel idea. In 2006, Perkins is a dynamic reality that is improving the world. Highlights – Campus, Community, Around the World • Almost 200 students in public schools received individual classroom services from Perkins teachers. • 3,370 teachers, aides, school administrators and other professionals increased their knowledge at trainings led by Perkins on campus and around New England. • 135 public school students attended academic, vocational and social weekends, vacations and summer programs at Perkins, often their only opportunities to interact with other youth who are blind. • An initiative to reach inner-city students who are blind began with an overnight in the Franklin Park Zoo, thanks to the support of The Boston Foundation and The Baupost Group. • Perkins disseminated over 5,000 publica-tions, spreading Perkins knowledge across the country and around the world. • DB Link, a Perkins resource for families and educators of people who are deaf-blind, and the Perkins Research Library provided information and services to over 18,000 people. • The New England Center for Deafblind Children, run by Perkins, led a Family Weekend on Cape Cod for 300 families. __________________________ PHOTO CAPTION: When you continue reading regardless of your vision… Independence is ageless. A child wants to feed herself. An adult wants to support himself. Those who are retired want their golden years to be golden. And nearly everyone wants to read the newspaper. Sight loss doesn't change any of that. Perkins helps elders with vision loss develop skills to stay independent – to cook safely, to read their mail, to use low vision devices. The Perkins Braille & Talking Book Library provides kids and adults with braille and recorded books, magazines and newspapers, downloadable audio books and described videos. From the beginning years to the golden years – and the years in between – the help of Perkins is timeless. Highlights – Campus, Community, Around the World • 733 elders received direct services or consultation in the community or in group classes at the Perkins Elder Learning Center. • Over 22,000 people from six months to 108 years old benefited from free recorded and braille books from the Perkins Braille & Talking Book Library. • Perkins Braille & Talking Book Library expanded Newsline, a telephone- based system for reading daily newspapers, which received over 67,000 calls. • The Library introduced PerKIDS, a web and newsletter-based initiative to increase library services to children and young adults. • The New England Eye Low Vision Clinic at Perkins assisted nearly 750 children and adults with low vision. • The recording studio at Perkins was recognized by the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped for excellence in recording books for the Perkins collection and for interlibrary sharing across the country. In this report we gratefully acknowledge gifts of $500 or greater. Thank you for your dedication and support. Whether you are a member of the Visionary Society, a contributor to the Gala, or a volunteer in Perkins Braille & Talking Book Library, you are an invaluable member of the Perkins family. As Perkins alumna Helen Keller said, "Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much." Together we are transforming the world for people who are blind, visually impaired or deafblind. Together all we see is possibility. 2006 Gala Donors On May 10, nearly 500 devoted friends gathered under a tent for the Perkins 2006 Gala, "A World of Possibilities… Begins on Perkins Campus". Emcee WBZ4's Lisa Hughes, a video, and performances by students and surprise guest Livingston Taylor, began the heart-warming evening. An exciting auction lead by Bob Lobel topped off the event. Everyone experienced first-hand how Perkins transforms lives here on campus, in the community and around the world. The evening was a huge success, raising nearly $900,000 to help children and adults be the best they can be. Perkins gratefully acknowledges the following individuals, corporations and foundations for making the 2006 Gala a resounding success. Anonymous (7) The Abbey Group Mr. Richard H. At Perkins School for the Blind it takes many forms, from remembering Perkins in a will or trust, to arranging Perkins to be a beneficiary of a retirement plan, to creating a life income agreement. The Thomas H. Perkins Legacy Society recognizes friends who have made planned gifts or notified Perkins of their bequest intentions. Thank you for investing in the future of the 87,000 babies, children and adults whose lives Perkins touches every year. Anonymous (3) Gennaro Acampora Trust Etta A.
