Teaching Accessible Science
Engaging students who are blind or visually impaired
Welcome to Teaching Accessible Science at the Perkins School for the Blind!
Our goal is to counteract the stereotype that students with disabilities cannot participate fully in science by sharing what we have learned through our teaching. To that end, we are sharing some of our favorite resources, materials, and activities. In time, we hope to make this an interactive space where others will share their ideas with us as well.
We hope this site will serve as a valuable resource for special education teachers, general education teachers, parents, and students. Science has been a core subject in the Secondary School curriculum for many years. Perkins high school students participate in a variety of science courses including Introductory Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Earth Science. Middle school students may take General Science or an Introductory course in Technology Engineering.
Many students come to Perkins with no background in science. Others arrive here with memories of very negative experiences in the science classroom. Science teachers at Perkins believe we have already achieved real success when our students enjoy classes, participate in laboratory experiments, ask questions about science, and have the opportunity to pass the state mandated testing in science.
